Reminder of new voter ID laws
St. Croix County Register of Deeds Beth Pabst reminds citizens that Wisconsin has new voter identification requirements for upcoming elections. A photo identification will be required to vote.
Wisconsin law requires the Department of Transportation to provide free ID cards to any individual who will be at least 18 years of age on the date of the next election and who requests a free ID for the purpose of voting. The regular fee is $28.
For information about getting a state identification card, visit the DOT’s website: www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/drivers/apply/idcard.htm.
Due to the need to provide a birth certificate and other documents to receive a DOT-issued ID, individuals should start the process of obtaining a statutory identification well in advance of an election at which they wish to vote. There is a fee for obtaining a birth certificate.
Contact the St. Croix County Register of Deeds Office at (715) 386-4652 for information on how to obtain your birth certificate.
